Oldsmobile Toronado

Every time I try to shoot this Toronado, something goes wrong. A barking dog nearby almost gets loose, an inconveniently placed semi-truck ruins the shot, or, on this occasion, an unhappy person comes from a few blocks away to tell me I shouldn’t be doing that. Maybe I’ll get that perfect shot eventually, but these will have to do for now.

I believe this is a second gen Oldsmobile Toronado, meaning it rolled off the line in Lansing in the 1970s. I really dig the first generation; however, generations two and three are pretty rad.

Believe it or not, there was a limousine version of this car. The AQC Jetway 707 was produced in the late 1960s with six wheels. There isn’t a ton of information about there about these cars, at least compared to the Oldsmobile they chopped up to make it. Less than 75 of these monsters were made, and AQC eventually folded.

I’ve always been curious about this Oldsmobile. It’s been sitting here for at least five or six years. If I remember correctly, there was a 60s Chevy Impala there before that, which I’m bummed I never got to shoot. There was a similar car on the street by my house for ages, too, but that one is also gone now.

When shooting cars in Detroit, you never know when a vehicle that’s been there for years will up and disappear. Whether someone nabs it, the owner sells it for scrap, or it vanishes into thin air—if you want a photo, you’d better act quickly. If I don’t get my act in gear, I might never get the perfect picture of this Toronado!

Happy Sunday, y’all.
