Toyota Cressida

Since I was a little kid, I’ve loved station wagons. I think it started when I was five or six years old. We lived in England then, and one of my best friends had one of those models where the rear seats turned around to face backward.

Whenever he and I had playdates, we would ask his mom to turn the seats backward so we could play sweet or sour. The game was simple—you gave people a thumbs up, and if they returned the gesture, they were sweet. If they didn’t or gave a thumbs down, they were sour. It remains a fond memory of the few years I spent outside the United States as a child.

For ages, my grandparents had a car that combined two of my favorite things; Saturn automobiles and station wagons. They had a Saturn S Series Station Wagon in a color that I can only describe as Grandpa Gold. I rode in that car countless times and think of them whenever I see one still on the road.

If you’ve followed this page for a while, you know that I love cars. Given the stories above, whenever I see a wagon, I try to take a photo of it.

Over the weekend, I found this setup in Southwest Detroit and couldn’t help myself. The colors are so warm and vibrant—while I was processing the images, it didn’t feel like I had shot them in Detroit.

The car in the frame is a Toyota Cressida.

Is there a car that most people don’t find ‘cool’ that you like? My unpopular picks are the AMC Pacer, Dodge Omni, AMC Gremlin, and just about any station wagon.
