XJ Jeep Cherokee

While exploring Detroit, something that isn’t architecturally significant, historic, or interesting catches my eye. Sometimes, you see something that just looks cool. This is one of those situations.

I found this second-gen XJ Jeep Cherokee in Delray saddled up onto a tow truck last week, and the scene felt like it needed photographing. I didn’t want to bother anyone, so I used a long lens and stayed away from the car. After all, if someone had taken the time to tow it, they hopefully had plans for it.

I’ve always loved this version of the Cherokee. Compared to the modern equivalent, these cars are pretty lightweight, small, and durable. That said, what can you compare an XJ to in 2023? There isn’t much like it out there. Plus, I’ve repeatedly heard about how long the 4.0L inline 6-cylinder will last.

I can’t tell you much about what’s towing it other than it once (and maybe still) had a 370-2V engine, and I think it’s from the 1980s.

What seemingly mundane things in Detroit excite you? 🧐
